On March 30, the United States eased energy restrictions on Cuba, permitting a Russian oil tanker loaded with crude oil to head to a Cuban port. According to Reuters, ship tracking data shows that the Russian-flagged tanker has arrived off the eastern coast of Cuba and is expected to dock today (30th). This shipment of crude oil is anticipated to temporarily alleviate Cuba’s current energy crisis. Due to the US oil embargo, Cuba has implemented strict gasoline rationing and has experienced multiple large-scale power outages. US President Trump stated to the media aboard Air Force One that he has no objections if any country, including Russia, wishes to send oil to Cuba. Earlier, The New York Times quoted US officials saying that the Coast Guard has approved the sanctioned Russian tanker to proceed to Cuba, but did not specify the reasons. Analysts believe that in the current volatile geopolitical situation, if the US were to forcibly intercept the tanker, it could increase the risk of conflict with Russia. (Dongxin News Agency)
