I just took a look at who holds the most bitcoins overall. The answer is quite interesting and shows how concentrated Bitcoin holdings actually are.

At the top is, of course, Satoshi Nakamoto with about 1.1 million BTC — these coins have never been moved since the early days, fueling ongoing speculation about his identity. Then come major crypto exchanges with over 550,000 BTC, held on behalf of their users. This demonstrates how central these platforms are in the market.

What surprised me: institutional investors now hold huge amounts. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, owns over 300,000 BTC, and other traditional financial firms like Grayscale and Fidelity have also built significant holdings. This is a real signal of institutional acceptance.

It's also interesting that governments play a role — the US government holds about 213,000 BTC from seizures, and China also has nearly 190,000. MicroStrategy, with its aggressive strategy under Michael Saylor, has accumulated over 226,000 BTC, heavily betting on long-term Bitcoin growth.

When you look at who holds the most bitcoins, it becomes clear: it's not individual private persons, but institutions and exchanges that shape market dynamics. This makes Bitcoin movements more predictable in many cases, but also dependent on institutional decisions. Quite wild how much the ecosystem has changed in recent years.
