Mainland funds have recently been moving in and out of Hong Kong stocks in large volumes, and the market can only hope that foreign investors step up their buying. Liu Shaowen, head of Asia Investment Strategy at HSBC Financial Services, admitted that for fund managers, Asian stock markets are often merely a “formality”—when “there’s something new or the valuation doesn’t fit the target, they don’t play.” He explained that global funds rarely invest in Asian equities over the long term; most are positioned for short- to medium-term deployment lasting one and a half years at most.
