Islamabad is becoming a new hub for peace in the Middle East? The head of the Pakistani military is frequently communicating with Trump, trying to mediate the U.S.-Iran conflict. Various forces are gathering, and any diplomatic breakthrough could rewrite the global energy and geopolitical landscape.

According to informed sources, Pakistan is fully promoting mediation efforts to end the conflict between the U.S. and Israel against Iran. The Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, Asim Munir, has spoken with Trump to seek solutions to the conflict.

Relevant individuals stated that Munir spoke with Trump on Monday, and since the discussion was private, the individual requested anonymity. Pakistan is positioning Islamabad as the negotiation site, while Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, is playing a key role in the negotiations.

Trump stated on Monday that after having “productive dialogue” with Iran, he would postpone strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. Although Iranian officials currently deny that any negotiations are taking place, CBS cited an unnamed senior Iranian foreign ministry official as saying that Iranian officials are reviewing messages from the U.S. conveyed through intermediaries.

The spokesperson for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, Tahir Andrabi, has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Pakistan is leveraging its close ties with Trump, along with its long-standing relationship with neighboring Iran and links to key countries like Saudi Arabia, to conduct diplomacy. On Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif spoke with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, pledging to maintain unity with Iran and calling for de-escalation of the conflict situation. Sharif stated on social media platform X that while sharing Pakistan’s diplomatic mediation efforts with the Iranian president, he assured Iran’s leadership that Pakistan would continue to play a constructive role in promoting regional peace.

According to the Financial Times, Munir had already spoken with Trump last Sunday. Axios cited an unnamed Israeli official as saying that a mediating country is trying to facilitate a meeting in Islamabad, with participants including Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.

As the conflict escalates and triggers an energy crisis, leading to severe gas shortages in South Asia, Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic engagement in the Gulf region. The Strait of Hormuz handles about 1/5 of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transport, and since the conflict began, the strait has effectively been closed. Pakistan imports almost all of its crude oil, refined oil, and liquefied natural gas from Gulf countries.

Last week, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar attended a joint meeting of foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic countries in Riyadh to discuss the current conflict. Informed sources said that after Iran launched retaliatory airstrikes against countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Pakistan worked to ensure that the joint statement would not exacerbate tensions between Iran and its Gulf neighbors.

Munir has also held multiple talks with Saudi Arabia regarding the conflict. On March 12, he traveled to Jeddah with Shahbaz Sharif to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Additionally, Munir met with the Saudi Minister of Defense in early March. Saudi Arabia and nuclear-armed Pakistan signed a defense agreement last September, stating that aggression against either party would be considered a joint aggression against both.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is also deeply embroiled in a conflict with neighboring Afghanistan. Cross-border attacks have intensified in recent weeks but are currently in a ceasefire state.
