[Caixin] The 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit will be held in China. On March 25, former Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo stated at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 that zero-sum games are spreading in many parts of the world, hoping that China, as the host of APEC, will set a positive and uplifting tone, bringing about positive-sum thinking.

In 2001 and 2014, China hosted APEC summits in Shanghai and Beijing, respectively. Yeo specifically mentioned that during the 2001 Shanghai APEC Summit, the atmosphere was tense when U.S. government officials first attended. After dialogue began, the atmosphere gradually eased. Now, the Asia-Pacific region has fallen back into a tense atmosphere, and it is again China’s turn to play a role in the summit.
