Abstract generation in progress

Approximately 200 gallons of oil leaked from Xcel Energy’s Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant in southern Minnesota. The leak was found during maintenance and Xcel Energy states no oil reached the Mississippi River. This incident follows a 2023 leak of 400,000 gallons of tritium-contaminated water from the same facility, for which the company was fined and vowed increased transparency.
