The mayor of Denver, Colorado, Johnston, issued an executive order on the 26th, announcing a series of regulations to respond to federal immigration enforcement actions. The regulations include that, without legal requirements, no gathering for the purpose of immigration enforcement is allowed on assets owned by the City of Denver. The Denver Police are obligated to intervene when immigration enforcement personnel may cause harm; the police will also record video and conduct independent investigations into violations. The regulations also state that, unless there is a legal requirement, no municipal agency may share databases or other technical means with the Department of Homeland Security or other immigration enforcement agencies. Johnston stated that the intention of this move by the City of Denver is not to provoke but to protect. It is reported that White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson responded that local officials should cooperate with personnel from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, rather than confront them, or else they are serving illegal immigrants who commit crimes.
