Wang Yi had a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal
On April 4, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke by phone with Faisal, the Saudi Foreign Minister. Faisal introduced the latest situation in the Middle East, stating that the Saudi side does not wish for the region to fall into war, but it is concerning that the conflict continues to spread and shows a trend of further escalation. The Saudi side has maintained restraint but also reserves the right to self-defense, hoping that the crisis can avoid further escalation and move toward de-escalation. The Saudi side appreciates China’s emphasis on regional security and stability and its active role in this regard, and is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China, promote peace and halt the fighting, and achieve peace and stability in the Middle East at an early date.
Wang Yi stated that the fighting in the Middle East is spreading and expanding, affecting Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, which China does not want to see. Regardless of the reasons, the indiscriminate use of force is unacceptable, and any actions that attack innocent civilians and non-military targets should be condemned. China commends Saudi Arabia for maintaining restraint and for resolving differences through peaceful means. It is truly commendable and worth cherishing that regional countries have achieved reconciliation; it is also worth continuing to promote this process.
China has always been a force for maintaining peace. China is willing to continue playing a constructive role and will send a special envoy on Middle East issues to mediate with regional countries. China strongly urges all parties to cease military actions, return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible, and prevent tensions from further escalating. (Xinhua News Agency)
