ChainCatcher reports that, according to Cointelegraph, as major crypto exchanges have widely adopted it and its features have continued to be optimized, the capacity of the Bitcoin Layer2 network—the Lightning Network—has reached a historic high.

Data from Bitcoin Visuals shows that the Lightning Network’s capacity has reached 5,606 BTC, breaking the record set in March 2023. Analytics platform Amboss also reported that the Lightning Network’s capacity hit a peak of 5,637 BTC, worth about $490 million. The data shows that after a year of capacity decline, the Lightning Network’s capacity surged in November and December, driven by more Bitcoin being added to the network, which makes transactions faster and cheaper.

At present, the number of Lightning Network nodes is 14,940, down from the peak of 20,700 in March 2022; while the number of channels between nodes is 48,678, also below the 2022 peak. The data indicates that the amount of Bitcoin added to the Lightning Network is increasing, but usage measured by the number of nodes and channels does not necessarily grow accordingly.
