Sharp Eyes | 4 billion in funding approved Security Bureau: Ensuring public peace of mind beyond monetary measures
The Legislative Council’s Finance Committee has approved funding of over 4 billion HKD to the Police Force to promote the “Sharp Eyes Project,” which aims to install a closed-circuit television system across Hong Kong.
The Deputy Secretary for Security, Chuk Hau-yeh, stated that the “Sharp Eyes” system is not one that measures value in monetary terms; the most important aspect is to ensure public order and safety, while also preventing and investigating crimes.
He also believes that if the Hong Kong community becomes a safe community where everyone can feel secure to engage in activities, that is its greatest value.
60,000 cameras covering the entire city by 2028
The first phase of the project was completed at the end of last year, installing approximately 5,000 closed-circuit television cameras and connecting about 6,000 cameras belonging to other government departments and agencies. The second phase of the plan will continue to be developed, adding over 20,000 cameras each year, with a total of 60,000 cameras expected to cover the whole city by 2028.
