Minister of Commerce Wang Wen Tao Meets with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
On March 25, according to the Ministry of Commerce website, on March 24, during the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) held in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Ambassador Li Yongxia, head of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the WTO, participated in the meeting. Wang Wentao emphasized that in the face of severe impacts on the international economic and trade order, China firmly supports Cameroon in successfully hosting the 14th Ministerial Conference and will strive to promote practical outcomes in areas such as WTO reform, investment facilitation, e-commerce, agriculture, and development, sending a positive signal of joint commitment by members to maintain the multilateral trading system. China supports reaching a document on WTO reform results and resolutely upholds basic WTO principles such as most-favored-nation treatment, avoiding a regression of global economic and trade relations to a “jungle law” based on power; actively participating in discussions on fair competition and other topics within the WTO framework, and is committed to enhancing the efficiency of the decision-making mechanism, restoring the functioning of the dispute resolution mechanism, and strengthening the authority, effectiveness, and relevance of the multilateral trading system. China insists on placing development at the center of the WTO agenda and will work with other members of the Global South to safeguard common interests, ensuring that the results of multilateral cooperation better benefit a broad range of developing members.
