BYD secures 100,000-unit order as the electric vehicle competition heats up
BYD has received an export order for 100,000 vehicles from its newly launched factory in Brazil, with the shipments to be evenly split between Argentina and Mexico. Meanwhile, Rivian’s stock price rose on Monday after TD Cowen upgraded the stock’s rating and target price, as investors focus on the company’s “game-changing product,” the R2 mid-size SUV, as described by the CEO.
BYD Brazil Factory to Supply Argentina and Mexico
Considered a major competitor to Tesla in China, BYD has secured an export order for 100,000 vehicles from its new factory in Camaçari, Brazil. The order will be evenly divided, with 50,000 vehicles shipped to Argentina and 50,000 to Mexico. This shipment highlights BYD’s strategy of using Brazil as a regional export hub as production at the Camaçari plant ramps up.
Rivian Rises on TD Cowen Support for R2 Strategy
TD Cowen analyst upgraded Rivian from “Hold” to “Buy” citing attractive risk-reward, with the target price raised from $17 to $20. The analyst noted the new platform has significant potential scale, estimating total demand for the R2 in the U.S. between 212,000 and 335,000 units, far above previous market expectations. Rivian positions the R2 as its first truly mass-market vehicle. The R2 Performance Launch Package starts at $57,990, with 656 horsepower, a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.6 seconds, with deliveries beginning in spring 2026. A lower-cost version priced around $45,000 is expected to launch in 2027. Rivian is positioning the R2 against Tesla’s Model Y, which sold nearly 360,000 units in 2025.
Market Pressures and Recent Catalysts
Rivian faces a challenging environment, with a forecasted $3.6 billion loss in 2025, declining deliveries, and the end of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. The R2’s public debut at the South by Southwest film festival from March 13-18 remains a key recent catalyst. Rivian’s stock rose 3.20% on Monday to $15.34.
BYD’s expansion into Latin America highlights increasing global competition, while Rivian’s launch of the R2 represents a crucial step in attracting mainstream buyers in a challenging market. Execution in production, pricing, and demand will be key factors for investors to watch.
