Hospital Authority | Eastern and Western Network on Hong Kong Island to merge into Hong Kong Island Network next month
The Hospital Authority announced that the Hong Kong Island East Network and Hong Kong Island West Network will officially merge into the Hong Kong Island Hospital Network starting April 1. The current Director of the Hong Kong Island West Network, Ms. Li De-li, will be appointed as the first Director of the Hong Kong Island Hospital Network, as well as the Chief Executive of Queen Mary Hospital and Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
Enhancing Network Collaboration to Serve 1.2 Million People on Hong Kong Island
The Hong Kong Island Network will manage 14 hospitals, including Queen Mary Hospital, Eastern Hospital, Ruttonjee Hospital, and Cheung Chau Hospital (all emergency hospitals), 10 rehabilitation, convalescent, and extended care hospitals, and 18 family medicine clinics, primarily providing medical services to about 1.2 million residents on Hong Kong Island.
A Hospital Authority spokesperson stated that the merger into the Hong Kong Island Network aims to strengthen existing collaboration and complementarity between the two networks through an integrated governance structure, improve overall healthcare quality, optimize treatment processes, and enhance resource utilization.
Most Patients Will Continue to Receive Care at Nearby Hospitals
The spokesperson emphasized that during the integration process, the vast majority of patients can continue to receive treatment at nearby hospitals, including emergency services, family medicine clinics, and some high-volume, less complex general specialist services. The integration will follow the principle of “providing services nearby when feasible and centralizing when necessary” to streamline healthcare services on Hong Kong Island.
For certain specialized services that require advanced clinical skills, personnel with specific qualifications, or complex equipment and technology—such as organ transplant services at Queen Mary Hospital and hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Eastern Hospital—specialized staff, equipment, and complex cases will be concentrated at designated hospitals.
