The Wall Street Journal reported on the 25th that U.S. President Donald Trump recently told his advisors that he hopes to “quickly” end the war with Iran and aims to “conclude the conflict within the next few weeks.”

The report, citing sources familiar with the matter, said: “As the fighting has lasted nearly a month, the president privately told his advisors that he believes the conflict is in its final stages and urged them to follow the timetable he publicly proposed at the start of the war—4 to 6 weeks.”

The report stated that Trump had told an advisor that the war was interfering with his efforts to push other priorities. Another person who recently spoke with Trump said he seemed ready to move on to the next major challenge but did not specify what that was.

The article noted: “The problem is that Trump has no easy options to end the war, as peace negotiations are still in the early stages. In discussions with external political allies, his attention often shifts to other issues, including the upcoming midterm elections, decisions to send immigration enforcement personnel to airports, and pushing Congress to tighten voter eligibility laws.”

Regarding recent U.S. troop deployments to the Middle East, the report quoted U.S. officials as saying Trump is willing but unlikely to send ground troops into Iran, partly because it could hinder his goal of quickly ending the conflict. Trump is also concerned that ongoing fighting could lead to increased U.S. military casualties. So far, 13 American soldiers have died in this war, and nearly 300 have been injured.

The report cited sources close to Trump as saying, “It’s generally unpredictable what decision Trump might make on war issues,” as he has been oscillating between diplomatic negotiations and escalating strikes. “Some of Trump’s associates are urging him to take a tougher stance, claiming that regime change in Iran could become his signature political legacy.”

Recently, Trump has insisted that the U.S. is engaging in dialogue with Iran, which Iran has denied.
