China-Japan Relations | Japan Department Stores' Duty-Free Sales to Chinese Tourists Drop 40% in February

Under the Chinese government’s reminder for citizens to avoid travel to Japan during the Spring Festival holiday, Japan’s duty-free sales to Chinese tourists in February decreased by about 40% year-on-year.

Kyodo News reported that the Japan Department Stores Association stated that the total duty-free sales of department stores nationwide in February were 45.3 billion yen, down 15.5% year-on-year, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline.

The association indicated that the consumption of Chinese tourists remains severely impacted, and coupled with the situation in Iran, there are concerns that consumer confidence may be further affected.
