Belgium Weighs Military Support for Saudi Arabia, UAE
(MENAFN) Belgium’s federal government remains undecided on whether to provide military support to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, following requests from the Gulf nations for assistance against possible Iranian attacks.
The matter has triggered debate within the ruling coalition, according to reports.
The New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), led by Defense Minister Theo Francken, along with the Reformist Movement (MR) and Les Engages, favor granting the request. They argue that Belgium should help protect civilians and preserve strong ties with the Gulf states.
Prime Minister Bart De Wever emphasized that the goal would not be to engage in combat but rather to assist in defending civilians in countries not directly involved in the conflict.
In contrast, coalition partners Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V) and Vooruit have voiced concerns. CD&V Chairman Sammy Mahdi cautioned that any military involvement, whether defensive or offensive, could still constitute participation in the conflict.
Vooruit leader Conner Rousseau questioned the initiative, stressing that Saudi Arabia should not be viewed as an ally and warning against involvement in a situation Belgium may not fully control. “In my world, Saudi Arabia is not an ally. If you don’t know what game you are playing, you should stay as far out of that game as possible,” Rousseau said.
