Before the $PI ecosystem is fully launched, it is in the stage of natural selection. Free trading allows the market to direct Pi to where it is needed. When the ecosystem prospers, that will be the true reflection of its value. Currently, it is similar to a secondary market distribution phase—although not free, the prices are very low, which can be considered a form of equality.
