A powerful earthquake struck the eastern area of Iwate Prefecture in Japan around 10:00 PM local time. The seismic event was recorded with a magnitude of 6, which is a significant tremor on the Japanese seismic scale.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers off the coast. As reported by RTHK, Japanese authorities confirmed that the strength of the quake will not generate tsunami waves, thus excluding tsunami risks for the surrounding coastal areas.

Iwate Prefecture, located on the northeastern coast of Honshu Island, is one of Japan’s most seismically active regions. This earthquake is part of the frequent seismic activity characteristic of Japan, which lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
