AI Battle | Meta Reportedly Delays New AI Model Release to May
The New York Times reports, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Meta has delayed the release of its internally named AI model “Avocado” from this month to at least May.
The report states that the new model, developed over several months, lags behind the latest products from competitors in performance. Despite Meta investing heavily in expanding its AI capabilities, including a chip self-development plan, the AI model release schedule has been pushed back. In January, the company announced a capital expenditure plan of $115 billion to $135 billion aimed at pursuing superintelligence—the vision of AI surpassing human intelligence.
It is also said that the head of Meta’s AI division has discussed the possibility of temporarily licensing Google’s Gemini to power the company’s AI products.
A Meta spokesperson said the company’s new model will perform well, but more importantly, it demonstrates that the company is on a rapid development trajectory. Over the next year, Meta plans to continue releasing new models steadily, pushing the boundaries of technology. The company looks forward to the public soon seeing the results of its efforts.
In December last year, CNBC reported that Meta is developing the next-generation large language model, internally codenamed “Avocado,” to replace the open-source Llama model with a closed model, aiming for a first-quarter 2026 release. During training, Avocado incorporates multiple third-party models, including Google’s Gemma, OpenAI’s GPT-OSS, and technologies from mainland Chinese companies such as Alibaba (09988).
