Shares in major agricultural commodity producers closed lower, reversing an early increase stemming from fears of global fertilizer shortages caused by the continuing blockage of the Strait of Hormuz.

Chemical companies with production away from the war zone are expected to benefit as the conflict in the Mideast hampers local activity. Analysts at Citi advised buying stock in Dow and LyondellBasell Industries on Thursday. Both were among the day’s top gainers.

Algoma Steel widened its loss in the fourth quarter and posted lower revenue as the company contends with U.S. steel tariffs that continue to weigh on results.
