Alphabet has launched its biggest upgrade to its mapping product in over a decade, introducing a new feature called “Ask Maps” in Google Maps, allowing users to interact with the app as if chatting with a chatbot.

On Thursday (March 12), Miriam Daniel, Vice President and General Manager of Google Maps, wrote on the official blog, “We’ve combined the latest global maps with our most powerful Gemini model to make exploring maps easier and more intuitive, and with the biggest navigation upgrade in over ten years, delivering an unprecedented experience.”

Daniel stated that the new “Ask Maps” feature can answer complex real-world questions that previous versions couldn’t handle, such as “Where can I charge my phone?”, “Where can I get coffee without waiting in line?”, or “Where is a lit public tennis court tonight?”

The press release said that now Google Maps users can simply click the “Ask Maps” button to receive conversational responses and get customized maps, helping users understand various options visually—something that previously required extensive searching and filtering through reviews.

The press release explained that Google Maps analyzes information from over 300 million locations and reviews provided by a community of 500 million users to offer personalized answers. “Instead of searching for locations or scrolling through reviews, Ask Maps allows users to ‘ask anything about anywhere.’”

Daniel said, “By combining the latest global map data with our most powerful Gemini model, we are transforming the process of exploring the world into a simple conversation.” Gemini has already been integrated into products to provide hands-free experiences, and this update will change how people use maps.

The new feature can also offer personalized restaurant recommendations based on users’ past searches or saved places. For example, if the system knows a user has specific dietary restrictions, “Ask Maps” might proactively recommend vegetarian restaurants, even if the user hasn’t explicitly asked.

For drivers, another Gemini-powered update will provide a full 3D view of roads and offer alternative routes when traffic congestion or real-time disruptions occur. This feature, called “Immersive Navigation,” will also give parking suggestions and practical directions such as building entrances.

According to Google, “Ask Maps” will begin rolling out on Thursday in the US and India for iOS and Android users; “Immersive Navigation” will be available in the US for eligible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with built-in Google systems, with plans to expand to more regions in the coming months.

Although Google Maps has long been the preferred mapping app for many consumers, Apple has recently invested heavily in developing its own mapping service, creating significant competitive pressure on Google’s ongoing innovation.
