Until now, a veil of secrecy has surrounded development of the new Xbox, which has been dubbed “Project Helix” within Microsoft. But now, the technology giant says that the console’s hardware will feature a custom microchip from Advanced Micro Devices AMD +0.47% ▲ .
A prototype of the new Xbox console will first be shipped to developers next year. An exact date when consumers will be able to get their hands on the video game console has not yet been announced. However, Microsoft has said in recent weeks that it is making a renewed commitment to its Xbox unit and console gaming.
Xbox’s Popularity with Gamers
Just over 7% of Microsoft’s revenue came from gaming in the fourth quarter of 2025, with Xbox hardware revenue declining 32%. In recent years, Xbox consoles have undersold alternatives from rivals. The current Xbox Series X and more affordable Series S came out in 2020, and gamers and analysts have been calling on Microsoft to deliver a new console.
The Xbox Series S and X, originally released in 2020, also contained AMD processors.
“I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027,” Ronald wrote.
Microsoft is reportedly pushing for its video game unit to reach a 30% profit margin. Last year, the business laid off some employees and scrapped titles that had been in development.
Sharma made reference to the next-generation console, known internally as Project Helix, in an X post last week.
“Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games,” she wrote.
