Recently, Hayden Adams, the founder of the Uniswap protocol, shared a critical perspective on the role of Rollups in the Ethereum ecosystem. In his analysis, the founder questions the common characterization of these projects as “parasites,” arguing that such descriptions ignore the reality of the technical work involved.

The Engineering Weight Behind Rollups

Hayden Adams highlights that Rollups undertake complex and costly engineering tasks aimed at increasing Ethereum’s processing capacity. When Ethereum’s strategy focuses on a Rollup-centric model, these Layer 2 solutions intentionally absorb a significant amount of the heavy lifting required to keep the network scalable. This structural outsourcing represents a considerable engineering cost.

The central issue raised by Adams is that this division of technical responsibilities should not be overlooked in discussions about the network’s future. Rollups are not merely applications that leverage Ethereum—they are, in fact, infrastructures that enable the network to operate viably at scale.

Path Toward Greater Technical Independence

For Ethereum to achieve a higher degree of independence, Adams argues that the network needs to move beyond a purely research mindset and adopt a serious, engineering-driven approach. According to the Uniswap founder, each technical challenge should not be treated solely as a theoretical research problem but as an issue requiring concrete, implementable solutions.
