CFTC Chair Selig Speech: AI and Blockchain Are Reshaping Financial Markets, Ending the Regulatory Turf War in the Coming Years

On March 10th, the Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Mike Selig, attended the FIA Global Clearing Market Conference in Florida and delivered a speech outlining the CFTC's regulatory direction and priorities amid the backdrop of a new technological revolution.

Selig stated that the United States is experiencing a new wave of technological innovation, with artificial intelligence, blockchain, and prediction markets rapidly transforming the financial landscape. He emphasized that the CFTC must ensure its regulatory framework keeps pace with these changes to maintain the U.S. financial market's global leadership.

Looking ahead over the next few years, Selig clarified three main focus areas:

First, guiding regulation through the principle of "minimum effective dose," to establish a forward-looking derivatives market regulatory framework that avoids overreach while effectively managing risks.

Second, addressing regulatory issues left over from the Dodd-Frank Act by amending provisions that are no longer suitable for the current market environment.

Third, ending the long-standing turf war between the CFTC and SEC, moving beyond the old era of "regulation through enforcement," and establishing a more coordinated and clearer division of regulatory responsibilities.

Selig concluded by expressing pride in leading the CFTC into a new era under President Trump’s leadership and pledged to continue efforts to ensure the U.S. financial markets remain the best in the world for years to come.
