Reddit fined £14.47 million by the UK Information Commissioner's Office for violations of children's privacy handling
IT Home, February 25 — The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced on the 24th that Reddit has been fined £14.47 million (approximately 1.34 billion RMB at current exchange rates) for failing to fulfill its legal obligations to protect the personal information of children in the UK.
Source: Pexels ICO stated that Reddit did not implement an age verification system in a timely manner and failed to complete a data protection impact assessment for children, resulting in non-compliance with data handling regulations for young users on the platform. These young users face the risk of exposure to inappropriate and harmful content on Reddit.
ICO also mentioned that Reddit’s current age verification relies on self-declaration by users, which can be easily bypassed. The agency is currently reviewing this situation.
