Multiple red and orange alerts due to heatwave, severe storms, and heavy rains
The National Weather Service (SMN) has issued a comprehensive weather alert system for different regions of the country, where adverse weather conditions prevail. The red heat alert remains at an extreme risk level for several sectors, while storm phenomena of significance are expected in northern areas. Meanwhile, the Greater Buenos Aires Area (AMBA) will remain relatively stable, though partly cloudy.
Red Heat Alert: Areas of Extreme Risk
The northwest of Corrientes and eastern Chaco are critical hotspots where the red heat alert is in effect, indicating “very dangerous” conditions that could affect the entire population, including healthy individuals. Temperatures in these areas could reach highs of 34°C, posing a “high to extreme” impact on public health.
At the same time, the orange heat alert has been extended to Formosa, northern Chaco, eastern Salta, and San Pedro in Misiones. In these areas, highs could reach up to 37°C, representing “very dangerous” conditions, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, seniors over 65, and people with pre-existing chronic illnesses.
Additional zones under yellow alert for high temperatures include parts of Misiones, Corrientes, Santa Cruz, Chubut, Río Negro, and Neuquén. Max temperatures are expected between 31°C and 33°C, with potential adverse effects mainly on at-risk groups.
Severe Phenomena and Hail Storms
San Luis reports the most critical level due to convective phenomena, under orange alert for severe storms. Meteorological events considered “dangerous to society, life, property, and the environment” are forecasted, including hail, intense electrical discharges, winds exceeding 90 km/h, and heavy rainfall concentrated over short periods. Rain accumulations are expected to range between 60 and 100 millimeters.
Meanwhile, twelve provinces — Misiones, Jujuy, Salta, Formosa, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Tucumán, La Rioja, Catamarca, Córdoba, San Juan, and Mendoza — will remain under yellow alert for storms. These phenomena could cause damage with gusts up to 80 km/h and accumulated rainfall of 40 to 60 millimeters, potentially disrupting daily activities temporarily.
In the Andean puna regions, precipitation may take the form of snow or hail depending on altitude. Additionally, El Calafate in Santa Cruz will be under yellow alert for heavy rain, with estimated accumulations between 15 and 30 millimeters.
Safety Recommendations for Weather Conditions
In response to this alert system, the SMN issued protective guidelines: increase water intake without waiting to feel thirsty, avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., reduce physical activity, and stay in ventilated spaces. Special attention should be given to children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
If symptoms such as dizziness, extreme fatigue, headaches, or loss of consciousness occur, seek medical assistance immediately and move the individual to a cool environment.
For storm phenomena, the organization recommends: follow instructions from local authorities, limit unnecessary travel, stay indoors, disconnect appliances if water enters, stay away from windows, avoid flood-prone areas, secure objects that could be displaced by wind, and prepare an emergency kit with drinking water, food, a first aid kit, portable radio, and flashlight.
Temperature Outlook for the Country
For the Greater Buenos Aires Area, a relatively stable day with partly cloudy skies is expected. Temperatures will range from a low of 19°C to a high of 28°C, with an average of 24°C, humidity at 81%, and winds from 23 to 31 km/h.
Across the rest of the country, the SMN projects variable highs and lows: Córdoba (30°C/16°C), Tucumán (26°C/20°C), Santa Fe (30°C/20°C), Entre Ríos (30°C/20°C), Jujuy (26°C/19°C), Salta (26°C/18°C), Misiones (31°C/21°C), Corrientes (35°C/23°C), Formosa (37°C/24°C), La Rioja (29°C/20°C), Santiago del Estero (34°C/24°C), San Luis (29°C/20°C), Catamarca (30°C/21°C), La Pampa (32°C/13°C), Chaco (35°C/23°C), and San Juan (29°C/20°C).
Additionally, maximum and minimum temperatures are estimated at 27°C and 18°C in Mendoza; 32°C and 14°C in Río Negro; 31°C and 16°C in Chubut; 15°C and 5°C in Tierra del Fuego; 33°C and 11°C in Neuquén; and in Santa Cruz, a maximum of 26°C with a minimum of 12°C, according to the National Weather Service.
