The US dollar gains strength amid geopolitical tensions
The market is seeing the US currency strengthen against the world's leading currencies. The reason lies in investors' pursuit of safe assets due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. When risks arise, demand for the dollar naturally increases — investors move to cash and low-risk assets.
Vishnu Varthanan of Mizuho Securities, who heads the macroeconomic research division, points to a common belief in financial circles: during periods of uncertainty, "cash is king." This conviction fuels interest in the US currency.
Meanwhile, the euro and other global reserve currencies are under pressure. Geopolitical risks, which boost the demand for liquidity, inevitably favor the dollar. As a result, the dominance of the dollar in currency markets is expected to become even more pronounced in the near future.
