(MENAFN) Iranian authorities name Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a clerical member of the Guardian Council, to serve on the country’s interim Leadership Council, according to an official statement released Sunday.

Mohsen Dehnavi, spokesperson for Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council, explains in a post on the US social media platform X that the appointment follows Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution.

He details that until a new supreme leader is appointed, a temporary Leadership Council is established, consisting of the country’s president, the head of the judiciary, and one clerical member from the Guardian Council.

Dehnavi adds that the council selected Arafi as the clerical representative to maintain leadership continuity while the Assembly of Experts works to designate a permanent leader “as soon as possible.”

The announcement comes on the same day that Iran confirms the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with several top officials during attacks carried out by Israel and the United States.
