Hwang Jung-eum admits in court to diverting company funds into cryptocurrency operations
A legal case that has captured the attention of Korean media involves actress Hwang Jung-eum, who controls her own management agency. During recent legal proceedings, Hwang Jung-eum admitted to diverting company resources to invest in digital assets, marking a significant financial scandal in the South Korean entertainment industry.
Details of the diversion of over 4.3 billion won
The Jeju District Court began the public hearing phase of the case, revealing the extent of the questioned transactions. According to court records, Hwang Jung-eum embezzled a total of 4.34 billion won between early 2022 and December of that year. Of this amount, 4.2 billion won was specifically used for cryptocurrency transactions, reflecting a large-scale investment strategy.
Legal defense and arguments presented
Hwang Jung-eum’s legal team chose to acknowledge the charges brought by the prosecution. However, their lawyers argued that these financial operations were conducted with the intent to strengthen and develop the agency. Additionally, they argued that any profits generated by the company ultimately belong to Hwang Jung-eum as the owner and controller, which is a central point in their defense.
Compensation plan and current status of the process
Hwang Jung-eum has taken steps to mitigate the consequences of the admitted charges. She has partially recovered the diverted funds by selling her cryptocurrency holdings, and also plans to liquidate real estate properties to complete the compensation. The court approved these restitution proposals, allowing the related procedures to continue within the established legal framework.
