U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Michael Selig announced at the Milken Institute's Future of Finance Conference that perpetual futures contracts for cryptocurrencies will soon be approved in the U.S. Selig stated that the agency has established a policy framework to bring "true perpetual futures"—that is, products that have no expiration date and allow for unlimited leveraged positions—to U.S. markets, aiming to achieve this within as little as a month. This move, which aims to bring the liquidity of these popular derivatives, currently concentrated on offshore platforms such as Asia, Europe, and the Bahamas, back to the U.S., seeks to strengthen investor protections while also standardizing risk management tools and price discovery mechanisms in the onshore environment. Selig adopted a cautious but determined approach, saying, "We need liquidity in the U.S., and we need to have the right investor protections in place so that firms don't explode and impact our shores." This development, seen as one of the biggest structural changes since spot ETFs, ends years of regulatory uncertainty in the crypto derivatives markets and has been met with positive reactions in the markets. It is also expected to increase the accessibility of leveraged crypto trading on US-based exchanges, with upcoming official announcements anticipated.
