The Inter-Parliamentary Union released a report on the 11th stating that a large number of parliamentarians worldwide have experienced violence from the public, with threats and harassment against lawmakers on the rise. Secretary General Martin Chungong of the Inter-Parliamentary Union said at a press conference that most respondents believe this type of violence is worsening, with female parliamentarians facing higher rates of violence than their male counterparts. Members of minority and vulnerable groups are at greater risk of online violence. The report attributes the increasing public hostility to political polarization, frustration caused by economic and social pressures, the amplification of anger on social media, and declining public trust in relevant institutions.
