The Moscow Metro, a key indicator for measuring the progress of the digital ruble
Russia is preparing for a major technological milestone in the digital payments sector. The modernization of Moscow’s transportation system, which includes the expansion of 13 new stations and an additional 27 kilometers of lines, will serve as a strategic platform to integrate the digital ruble, Russia’s central bank digital currency. This project is scheduled to be completed by 2028 and will allow users to recharge their transportation cards through this new payment system.
The initiative responds to a regulatory framework established by the Duma in 2023, which mandates the gradual adoption of digital ruble payments. According to the official schedule, mandatory implementation of these digital payments will begin on September 1, 2026, marking a turning point in the transition to a cashless economy. Moscow’s metro will act as a gauge for the success of this policy, demonstrating the viability of digital currency in everyday transactions for millions of users.
With this expansion, Russia is positioning its metro system not only as a means of transportation but also as a testing ground to measure the acceptance and functionality of its CBDC in the real world. The project represents a decisive step toward modernizing the national payment system and consolidating the country’s digital sovereignty in the coming years.
