U.S.-flag tanker encounters Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz
In early February 2026, a tense situation occurred in the Strait of Hormuz involving a U.S.-flagged oil tanker and multiple Iranian vessels. This strait is a critical route for global oil transportation, and the incident has drawn significant attention as a serious event impacting international maritime security.
Encounter with U.S. Tanker “Stena Impero”
On February 3rd, multiple media outlets reported that the U.S.-flagged tanker “Stena Impero” was approached by six Iranian armed boats while navigating the Strait of Hormuz. According to Jin10, the Iranian small vessels communicated via radio to the tanker’s captain, instructing him to stop the engine and prepare to be boarded.
In response, the tanker accelerated and maintained its course. This decision not to comply is considered to be based on the principle of freedom of international maritime navigation.
Safe Passage Under U.S. Military Escort
During its passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the Stena Impero was under the escort of U.S. military ships. The presence of U.S. forces is believed to have complicated the situation and served as a deterrent against the Iranian vessels’ approach attempts. The tanker arrived safely at the Port of Sitra in Bahrain as scheduled on February 5th, completing its voyage without incident.
Iran’s Position and Claims
Meanwhile, Iran’s news agency Fars offered a different perspective. According to Fars, they claimed that vessels entering Iranian waters without permission were seized, asserting this as an exercise of Iran’s territorial sovereignty.
These conflicting claims reflect the ongoing tension between the U.S. and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and could influence future maritime security developments.
