Due to Congress's failure to pass appropriations on time, the US federal government has once again entered a shutdown crisis
Latest market news: The US federal government will enter another shutdown in the early hours of January 31. This shutdown is the second government closure within nearly three months since the historic 43-day shutdown at the end of last year.
According to the Office of Management and Budget, affected agencies should begin implementing orderly shutdown plans due to Congress's failure to complete appropriations on time. While funding for some departments has been preserved, most federal spending issues remain unresolved.
The affected departments are extensive, including key agencies such as the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, State Department, Department of Labor, Department of Transportation, Department of Health and Human Services, and Department of Education, which have begun executing orderly shutdown plans.
Market opinion suggests that although the Senate passed appropriations bills for multiple departments before the deadline, they could not be voted on in time because the House of Representatives was in recess until next Monday. As a result, funding for several federal departments will run out on January 30.
However, the House will reconvene next Monday, and since all parties are unwilling to repeat the 43-day shutdown of last year, it is very likely that they will quickly pass the Senate's version, allowing the government to reopen within the next few days.
Despite the full shutdown crisis, the agreement reached by the government also provides some key departments with funding through the end of September, creating space for bipartisan negotiations on related issues, while effectively preventing a complete government shutdown.
Overall, although the current shutdown may end as early as next week, the underlying political conflicts that triggered this crisis remain unresolved.
If negotiations around core issues between the two parties fail to reach a consensus in the short term, the US government may continue to remain shut down in the coming weeks.
