@WalrusProtocol is a next-generation decentralized storage network developed by Mysten Labs—the team behind the Sui blockchain. The project is designed to serve as a data infrastructure layer for Web3, AI, and autonomous systems, addressing the challenge of storing large volumes of data with low cost, high speed, and superior durability.
Unlike traditional blockchains that need to copy data to all validators (replicating over 100 times, which is extremely costly), #Walrus uses erasure coding technology to split data into multiple pieces (slivers) and distribute them across a network of storage nodes. Only a small portion of these pieces is needed to recover the entire original data, even if 2/3 of the nodes fail or are attacked. As a result, the backup factor is only 4x–5x, comparable to traditional cloud storage but still ensuring decentralization and censorship resistance.
Walrus allows uploading large data volumes up to gigabytes at low cost, while scaling storage capacity to Exabytes as the number of nodes increases. The system guarantees availability, integrity, and data authenticity without needing to download the entire file, providing superior reliability compared to centralized solutions.
Walrus can be applied in many fields such as: storing NFT and game content, serving as a Data Availability layer for rollups and Layer 2, storing datasets and AI models, archiving blockchain history, building fully decentralized websites, as well as implementing subscription models for creator content. Currently, Walrus has launched a Developer Preview for the Sui community with a toolkit including CLI, API, and 10-node Devnet. $WAL
