"Meet Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis: The visionary behind Pi Coin"
Nicolas Kokkalis, a Greek computer scientist and entrepreneur, has established himself as a major figure in blockchain development, primarily known as the co-founder and chief technology officer of the Pi network.
Born on March 19, 1984, in Athens (, some sources mention 1978), he grew up in Glyfada where his affinity for computing manifested early. After earning a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Athens in 2006, he flew to the United States for a master's degree at Stanford in 2008, followed by a PhD in 2012. His doctoral research focused on distributed systems and human-computer interaction, notably developing a precursor framework for “smart contracts” that are found today in several blockchain ecosystems.
His career combines academic rigor and entrepreneurial innovation. At Stanford, he contributes to research on computer systems before co-founding Callinica, developing mobile applications for healthcare professionals. His expertise in designing viral social applications has earned him recognition with projects attracting over 20 million users and a Facebook Fund award in 2009 as the technical director of Gameyola.
In 2011, he co-founded StartX, a startup accelerator affiliated with Stanford valued at over 26 billion dollars, where he served as chief technology officer until 2018. But it was on March 14, 2019 - symbolically Pi Day - that he launched his flagship project, the Pi Network, with his colleagues Dr. Chengdiao Fan and Vincent McPhillip. This decentralized cryptocurrency, designed to be mined on mobile devices, aims to democratize access to digital currencies.
I find his vision quite revolutionary, even though I have doubts about the project's actual decentralization. Isn't it just another way to attract millions of users into a system that may never reach its full functionality?
Assistant professor at Stanford where he taught the first course on decentralized applications in 2018, Kokkalis is featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 in technology (2020) and advises the World Economic Forum on blockchain.
If the Pi network succeeds in its open Mainnet phase, Kokkalis could indeed make history in cryptocurrencies. But frankly, after so many years of “mining” on mobile with no real value, I wonder if it is not simply a brilliant viral marketing system rather than a true monetary revolution.
