Musk directly appealed to Trump to withdraw the new tariffs, but has not yet achieved results.
On April 8, according to The Washington Post, over the past weekend, when Elon Musk repeatedly posted on social media criticizing a hardline tariff plan pushed by one of President Trump’s chief White House advisors, he had actually bypassed that official and directly appealed to Trump himself. According to two insiders (who requested anonymity due to the private nature of the conversations), Musk’s intervention has not yet been effective. However, Trump has also expressed an openness to negotiating certain policy aspects. Meanwhile, Musk uploaded a video on the X platform featuring the late conservative economist Milton Friedman, in which Friedman emphasized the benefits of international trade cooperation, referring to it as “the impersonal operation of prices,” and analyzed the global sources of various materials using a common wooden pencil as an example.
