It finally feels like it's here. It seems that OpenAI's plan to announce its first consumer AI device in the second half of 2026 has been confirmed. Up until now, OpenAI has focused on software like ChatGPT, but now they are officially entering the hardware world.
Interestingly, Johnny Ive is involved in this project. It is reported that the former Apple chief designer is leading the effort, and that OpenAI acquired his startup io in 2025, which marked the start of the project. Hardware and industrial design experts are gathering to create a new category of AI computers.
In terms of specs, the device is characterized by being screenless and voice-first. It is said to have a small form factor similar to pods or pen-shaped devices, weighing around 10 to 15 grams. It is compact enough to fit in a pocket, clip onto clothing, or be worn with a neck strap. It will have microphones and cameras for environmental awareness, and there are considerations to include features like converting handwritten notes into text and syncing with ChatGPT.
What’s interesting is that this device is not meant to replace smartphones. CEO Sam Altman described it as "incredibly simple" and positioned it as a "third core device" that complements smartphones and laptops. The design philosophy emphasizes minimalism and ease of use.
The code names for the device have been reported as "Gumdrop" and "Sweetpea." Initially, there was an ambitious goal to produce 100 million units, but due to privacy concerns and infrastructure challenges, full commercial release might be delayed until 2027.
Foxconn has been chosen as the exclusive manufacturing partner, with production expected in Vietnam or the United States. This decision reflects a focus on diversifying supply chains. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, OpenAI’s policy leaders mentioned hardware devices as a major focus for 2026, so an announcement is definitely planned, but the exact release date remains uncertain.
This could serve as an entry point into other hardware products like smart glasses or AI-powered speakers. The price, final specifications, and exact release date have not yet been disclosed, but further announcements are expected within the year. I believe this startup’s move could significantly transform the entire AI device market.
