Iran proposes a phased negotiation: prioritize reopening the Strait of Hormuz, delay nuclear talks to a later stage
According to Axios, citing informed sources, Iran has presented a new proposal to the United States, suggesting that an agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting maritime blockades be prioritized, while nuclear negotiations are postponed to a later phase.
This new proposal aims to break the current deadlock in US-Iran talks while bypassing internal disagreements among their leadership regarding "the scope of nuclear concessions that could be made when reaching an agreement with the Trump administration."
The report states that the new proposal conveyed to the U.S. through a Pakistani mediator will focus first on resolving the crisis in the strait and the U.S. blockade.
As part of the agreement, a ceasefire would be extended long-term or both sides would agree to end the war permanently. Currently, the White House has received the proposal, but it is unclear whether the U.S. is willing to reach a settlement.
Three U.S. officials revealed that President Trump is expected to hold a senior team meeting on Iran issues on Monday. The meeting will discuss the deadlock in negotiations with Iran and possible next steps for the conflict.
What is your view on Iran’s proposal? Do you think this plan can break the deadlock in US-Iran negotiations, or will it further deepen the divisions between the two sides?
