U.S. intelligence agencies assess that Iran is unlikely to open the Strait of Hormuz in the short term. Recently, U.S. intelligence evaluations suggest that Iran regards the Strait of Hormuz as an important “chip” to counterbalance the United States, and is unlikely to relax its control over this vital energy shipping route in the near future. Analysts believe that the United States is currently caught in multiple dilemmas: on one hand, Iran, with its advantageous geographical position, controls the Strait of Hormuz, making it difficult for the U.S. to use force to “open” the passage; on the other hand, Iran will continue to use the strait as a bargaining chip, making the prospects for U.S. negotiations difficult.
