Hong Kong police have cracked a virtual currency "Gold Grain Money Laundering" scam case involving approximately 7 million Hong Kong dollars.
News from Mars Finance: According to a report by Hong Kong Wen Wei Po, Hong Kong police have disclosed the detection and investigation of a cross-border phone scam case. The criminal group impersonated mainland officials and carried out fraud specifically targeting mainland students studying in the UK and Australia. The scammers falsely claimed that the victims were involved in criminal cases such as money laundering, and demanded that they “cooperate with the investigation.” The fraudsters then went to Hong Kong and, in multiple visits to jewelry stores, purchased gold nuggets in installments as “security deposits,” with each payment not exceeding 120,000 HKD to avoid the jewelry shop registration system. Subsequently, the group members collected the gold nuggets and transferred the stolen goods. The gold nuggets obtained were then melted into gold bars or exchanged for cash and virtual currencies. Police have currently received a total of 7 related cases, involving approximately 7,000,000 HKD, with the highest loss in a single case reaching 1,600,000 HKD.
