ECB Chooses Open Standards for Digital Euro, Challenging Visa and Mastercard

The ECB signed agreements with three European standards bodies to build the digital euro on open, non-proprietary payment infrastructure. The framework uses CPACE for contactless payments, nexo standards for merchant and ATM connectivity, and Berlin Group rules for account-based transfers. The ECB said the approach could reduce reliance on Visa and Mastercard, but euro-area scale still depends on digital euro regulation being adopted.
