Google invests up to $40 billion in Anthropic, with $10 billion paid upfront, valuing the company at $350 billion

AIMPACT News, April 25 (UTC+8), Google reached an investment agreement with Anthropic: an immediate cash investment of 10 billion USD, at a pre-money valuation of 350 billion USD (the same as Anthropic’s funding round in February this year); an additional 30 billion USD will be provided after Anthropic reaches certain performance milestones, with Anthropic not disclosing specific trigger conditions. Google also committed to providing 5GW of new data center capacity through Google Cloud over the next five years for Anthropic.

This deal follows this week’s agreement between Anthropic and Amazon: Amazon commits to investing 5 billion USD, with an additional 20 billion USD later; Anthropic, in turn, promises to purchase over 100 billion USD worth of chips and computing power from Amazon. Both major cloud providers are heavily investing in Anthropic, while Google is also advancing its Gemini model line, which directly competes with Anthropic.

Anthropic’s annual revenue has surged from 9 billion USD at the end of last year to over 30 billion USD. In February this year, Anthropic completed a 30 billion USD funding round at a post-money valuation of 380 billion USD, led by Singapore’s sovereign fund GIC and Coatue, with participation from Microsoft and Nvidia. Bloomberg reports that investors are already participating in follow-on investments at a valuation of over 800 billion USD, and Anthropic is considering an IPO as early as October.
