I just reviewed something quite interesting published by Alex Thorn from Galaxy Research. The White House has just released its new national cyber strategy, and for the first time in the history of these documents, cryptocurrency and blockchain are explicitly mentioned.
The document has 7 pages with 6 main pillars focused on cyber defense and deterrence. What stands out is that Biden in 2023 didn't even mention crypto in his security strategy, but now it’s there. The text proposes "protecting and ensuring the security" of these technologies, which is a notable shift in the official discourse.
But here comes the part that probably concerns many in the community: they also talk about "eliminating criminal infrastructure and cutting financial channels." Along with new executive orders against transnational cybercrime, this could be the political foundation regulators needed to crack down harder on mixers, private coins, and unregulated platforms.
The cyber strategy also proposes expanding permissions for offensive operations, mobilizing the private sector, and accelerating automated defense with AI. They will establish a new operational unit within the National Coordination Center to coordinate actions against transnational criminal groups.
In summary, it’s a document that recognizes the importance of protecting the ecosystem but also leaves the door open for more aggressive repression. The balance between protection and control will remain the central theme in how crypto regulation evolves in the United States.
