Developers Criticize Anthropic's Sudden Changes to Subscription Plan, Community Favoring OpenAI

According to monitoring by Beating, Anthropic has tested removing the terminal tool Claude Code from its $20 Pro plan on its pricing page, sparking widespread criticism within the developer community. Many users have accused Anthropic of poor communication and ‘greedy’ practices, condemning this unannounced price increase as detrimental to the tool’s reliability, and many have threatened to unsubscribe. Meanwhile, community sentiment is clearly shifting towards OpenAI. This is partly due to OpenAI’s explicit commitment to keeping Codex free and at a basic subscription level, and also thanks to the strong performance of its recent models: the flagship model GPT-5.4 has surpassed human expert benchmarks in tests such as OSWorld computing, and the newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.0 has topped the Image Arena rankings. The comparison of business strategies and the solid performance of new models have accelerated user migration. Many developers who originally relied on Claude Code are now switching to Codex, joking that Anthropic is actively helping OpenAI harvest users for free. According to data released yesterday, Codex’s weekly active users have exceeded 4 million.
