Just realized a lot of folks are confused about how to change bank details on SASSA R350 and other grants. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're getting.
If you're on the SRD grant, you're lucky—it's mostly online. Go to the official SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure link via SMS. Click it, add your new bank account details, and you're done. Make sure the account is in your name though, or SASSA won't process it. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification.
Changing your phone number for SRD is similar—use their contact portal, enter your ID and Application ID, add the new number, they send an OTP to verify, and submit. Dead simple if the portal works (sometimes it doesn't, so have the helpline number ready: 0800 60 10 11).
Now, if you're on permanent grants like old age or disability, it's way more annoying. You have to physically go to a SASSA office—no online option. Bring your original ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account (stamped statement not older than 3 months or a bank letter). Fill out their Payment Method Change Form, they verify everything, and it takes up to 21 working days to process. Important: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
One thing everyone misses: SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything in someone else's name. Has to be yours only. And watch out for fake websites claiming to help you change details—stick to the official SASSA portal.
If the online stuff doesn't work or you're stuck, just call the helpline or visit your local office. Takes longer but honestly more reliable than dealing with portal glitches.
