Just realized a lot of people don't know how to change your SASSA banking details properly, especially if you're on permanent grants. Here's what I learned – might save you from payment delays.
If you're getting old age, disability, or child grants, you can't do this online. You literally have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your valid SA ID (original and copy), and proof of your new bank account – either a bank statement from the last three months or an official letter from the bank. Important thing: the account must be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything.
At the office, fill out the Payment Method Change Form (they call it the Consent Form for Bank Payment). The official processes it, sends it to the bank for verification, and this can take up to 21 working days. If you want the new details to work next month, submit before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
For the SRD R370 grant, it's way different – everything's online through the official SASSA SRD portal. Enter your 13-digit ID, they send you a secure SMS link, click it, add your new bank details, and you're done. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. Same rule though: account must be in your name.
Changing your phone number? For permanent grants, call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. For SRD, use the contact portal on the website – enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, they send an OTP to verify. Watch out for fake websites trying to scam you into changing your details. Always use the official SASSA links.
One more thing: if you're using the money transfer option for SRD, your phone needs to be RICA-registered in your name. Sounds like a lot of steps, but it's pretty straightforward once you know what you're doing.
