I just read something that left me stunned... a guy from Texas was sentenced to 23 years in prison for orchestrating a $20 million cryptocurrency scam. Nearly a thousand investors fell for the trap.

The most absurd part is how he did it. Between 2018 and 2023, Robert Dunlap pretended to run a legitimate crypto company and sold a fake token called Meta-1 Coin. He told investors it was backed by one billion dollars in artworks (supposedly Picasso, Dalí, Van Gogh) and 44 billion dollars in gold. All lies. Neither the gold nor the paintings existed. He also forged legal documents to make it seem credible.

Judge LaShonda A. Hunt sentenced him to 23 years without hesitation, and he will also have to pay restitution to the victims. Cases like this are a reminder of why we should distrust any promise about cryptocurrency scams that sounds too good to be true. Did people really believe there was a billion dollars in hidden art?
