Been doing some research on where people can actually afford to live without constantly worrying about safety, and honestly found some pretty solid options I didn't expect. Turns out there are legit safest towns in the US that won't completely drain your wallet either.

What caught me off guard is how many of these places are in Ohio. Like, seven of the top 15 safest towns in the us are there. New Philadelphia has homes averaging around $186k with monthly mortgages under $1,100. Even Berea and Mount Vernon are sitting pretty with annual living costs under $38k and violent crime rates basically in the 0.4-0.6 range per 1,000 people.

But Ohio isn't the only game in town. San Elizario, Texas is wild - homes under $170k average, mortgage payments under $1,000 monthly, and the violent crime rate is literally 0.10 per 1,000. That's insanely low. Then there's New Ulm, Minnesota with an even lower violent crime rate at 0.29, though homes run a bit higher around $223k.

The real standout among safest towns in the us for me was Edwardsville, Illinois. Sure, homes are pricier at $303k, but the livability score hits 90 and crime rates stay incredibly low. Columbus, Indiana surprised me too - 51k population, solid safety metrics, and still keeping annual costs around $40k.

What's interesting is the spread. You can find safest towns in the us with annual living costs anywhere from $35.5k to $45k depending on where you look. Some have property crime rates that are higher than violent crime, others are balanced. If you're actually considering a move and want that combination of affordable housing and low crime, these towns are definitely worth looking into. The data's pretty recent too, so it's a solid snapshot of what's available right now.
