Just found out dogs can actually have oranges and I'm kind of surprised? Like, I always thought citrus was a no-go but apparently it's fine in small amounts. My buddy has a Yorkie and was asking if she could share hers, and turns out yeah—even smaller breeds like yorkies can eat oranges, you just gotta be careful with portions.
So here's the thing: oranges have all these vitamins and minerals that are actually good for dogs. Vitamin C, fiber, potassium, calcium—basically the same stuff that's good for us. But the catch is your dog's food probably already has all that, so oranges are more of a treat thing, not a diet staple. For a small dog like a Yorkie, we're talking like one to three small pieces max, and it should only be like 10% of their daily food intake.
The important part nobody mentions: remove the peel and seeds first. Apparently there's cyanide in there or something? Also don't give them canned oranges because they're loaded with sugar. Fresh is the way to go. And if your dog has diabetes, skip it entirely because of the sugar content.
If you've got a puppy, introduce it slowly because their digestive system is more sensitive. Some dogs might get an upset stomach or diarrhea if you overdo it. Worth checking with your vet first too, just to be safe. Anyone else feeding their dog fruit as treats?
